January 21, 2008 Lyon to host annual West Endowed Concert Jan. 31 in Bevens Music Room The sound of music will echo throughout Lyon College as the school hosts its annual West Endowed Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in Bevens Music Room. In a program titled "The Magic of Sixty-Nine Strings," harpist Elisabeth Chardonet, double bassist John Dahlstrand and the Rockefeller String Quartet will play works of Bottesini, Brahms, Caplet and Ravel.

College to celebrate Diversity Week On Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Black Student Association will host a reception at 7 p.m. in Bevens Music Room. Marcos Napa, a native of Lima, Peru, and Teresa Maldonado will present an Afro-Peruvian music and dance program at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Holloway Theater. Napa will give the history of the arrival of black people to Peru as well as introduce popular dances and instruments. Burns Night scheduled Jan. 26 canceled Lyon College’s Robert Burns Night scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, has been canceled. The event will not be rescheduled. The Lyon Pipe Band is scheduled to perform Sunday, Jan. 27, at Kirkin' o' the Tartans services at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.

Record
number of student athletes named The Lyon College student athletes have definitely put the “student” before the “athlete” in the classroom this fall. Lyon’s Athletic Department is pleased to announce that a school-record 80 athletes have been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the Fall 2007 semester. To make the AD’s honor roll, a student athlete must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average or better. Seven athletes – Meredith Davis (golf) , Juan Daza (tennis), Snezana Jovanovic (basketball), Drew Kellums (baseball), Heather Palmer (soccer), Glenn Ritter (cross country) and Andy Schatzley (baseball) – managed to maintain a 4.0 average during the Fall 2007 semester. Japanese wedding kimonos are on display The Mabee-Simpson Library of Lyon College is displaying vintage wedding kimonos that are on loan from First Community Bank. Dale Cole, chairman and chief executive officer, purchased them from his friend, Harvey Bell, who currently resides in Japan. The gowns will be displayed until the end of January. Exhibit at library to honor Joseph Beuys A new art exhibit will open at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Mabee-Simpson Library. The exhibit, “Beuys Will Be Beuys,” (pronounced "bo-eze") will feature 120 artists from 30 countries whose works will be shown on a rotating basis through June, according to John Chiaromonte, who will introduce the exhibit.

College to host Preview Day Jan. 26 Lyon College will host its third Preview Day for high school seniors and juniors and their families on Saturday, Jan. 26, on campus. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Lyon Building on the north side of campus. Dr. Roettger addresses West Little Rock Rotarians; Lu Harden unable to attend Lyon President Dr. Walter Roettger spoke to the West Little Rock Rotary Club last Wednesday at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. Lu Harden, president of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, was originally scheduled to appear with Dr, Roettger to talk about the state of higher education in Arkansas and the differences between private colleges such as Lyon and state universities like UCA. Harden canceled his appearance the morning of the event so he could campaign for Mike Huckabee in South Carolina. Dr Roettger addressed these and other issues in his speech and in a question-and-answer session that followed. Photo Lyon College Scottish Heritage Program Director Jimmy Bell placed fourth in the Winter Storm Weekend Scottish competition in Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 11-13. Free mental health screenings available for students either in person or online Lyon College is offering a free mental health screening for students for a range of common emotional conditions that often go undiagnosed and misunderstood. Counseling and Health & Wellness will be offering free, confidential screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The screenings and information sessions are being held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Morrow Building. Students also can call Diane Ellis, director of counseling, at 307-7284 for more information. Thomason grant for the college's Rogers Center project. The church's D. Thomason grant committee awarded nearly $250,000 to 19 different nonprofit organizations representing ministries, missions and education. Essay contest announced by Outlook The Presbyterian Outlook has announced its second annual Church-College Partnership Award competition for seniors who will graduate from Presbyterian colleges in 2008. First prize is $1,000. Students must submit a 1,000-word essay on “How my education at a PCUSA-related college has equipped me for significant service and leadership.” |
