Dr. Beckford receives additional grant from to purchase equipment for research

Dr. Floyd Beckford, associate professor of chemistry at Lyon College, has received a $25,000 grant to purchase equipment for research that may one day help in the fight against cancer.

In addition to the $25,000 grant, the Arkansas IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program previously awarded Beckford’s work a grant totaling more than $100,000.

Beckford said the aim of the research, in the long term, is to synthesize and examine the biological activity of inorganic complexes. He said he and his partners are interested in determining if there is any anticancer activity of the compounds they make.

“We are hopeful that this equipment award will enhance the research capabilities at Lyon College,” said Lawrence E. Cornett, professor and director of the Arkansas INBRE program.

The equipment must be onsite by April 30.

The project was funded by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), under the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The IDeA program was established for the purpose of broadening the geographic distribution of NIH funding for biomedical and behavioral research. Currently NCRR supports INBRE programs in 23 states and Puerto Rico.
