Lyon College recently announced a new initiative, called the Lyon Experience. The Lyon Experience builds upon strong major programs of study and pre-professional studies – all grounded in a proven liberal arts foundation – and offers you experiences for a lifetime: Jon McLaughlin concert scheduled April 29
Island Records recording artist Jon McLaughlin will be in concert at Lyon College Tuesday, April 29. The concert will be held on the Knoll behind the Mabee-Simpson Library.. Gates will open at 6 p.m., with an opening act to play at 7 p.m. Lyon students will be admitted free with ID. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Student Life Office in Edwards Commons or you can reserve tickets by calling 870-307-7314. There are also tickets on sale at UACCB at the information desk in Independence Hall. Tickets will be sold at the gate on the day of the show. More Lyon to offer Frisbee golf next fall By Lindsey Fry Lyon College offers a variety of different activities on campus for students to be a part of. Several sports are sponsored at Lyon College such as volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball and golf. Other organizations that are open to all students include: Student Activity Council (SAC, Campus Ministries, cheerleading, and most recently added is the swim club, just to name a few. Beginning next fall in the 2008 semester, there will be another event added to the roster of activity. It's called "Frisbee golf." XAS looks for adventure in everything By Serena Cleveland Do you like Xtreme sports? How about Adventure? The Xtreme Adventure Squad (XAS) offers just that with extreme, adventurous, and fun opportunities for Lyon students every month! This group of thrill-seeking students gathers together for events such as day hiking trips, climbing, canoe float trips, paintball, and cave tours. Wanna hear more about this awesome club?! Swim club is new activity for Lyon students By Stephanie Hupp Jessica Throesch started the Lyon College Swim Club this spring semester with Professor David Sonnier as the advisor. The Swim Club is open to anyone who wants to join for free. Students don't have to have previous experience to join. Students learn fossil collecting techniques Eight Lyon College biology students and their instructor, Dr. Han Chuan Ong, recently visited the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History at the University of Oklahoma. At the museum, they were given a lecture and tour by Dr. Richard Cifelli, who is the curator and a world-renowned paleontologist. Kyle Davies, the museum preparator, also gave a brief demonstration of fossil preparation and processing technique. Students win Alpha Chi graduate fellowships Two Lyon College seniors recently won graduate fellowships awarded by Alpha Chi National College Scholarship Honor Society. The honored students are Blake Perkins of Smithville and Nathan Reinhardt of Little Rock. Perkins and Reinhardt won two of only 10 H. Y. Benedict Fellowships awarded nationally by the society, which has chapters on more than 300 hundred college and university campuses. Each fellowship is valued at $2,500 and is intended to support the recipients in their first year of graduate study. More Lyon hosts annual Hogwarts Day By Courtney Kovacs In honor of the bestselling Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, Lyon College Mortar Board and Big Brothers Big Sisters hosted Hogwarts Day for the children of Batesville. Hogwarts Day was held in the Lower Union on Sunday, April 6. Beginning at 1 p.m., children were sorted into one of the four Hogwarts Houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, or Ravenclaw). The Houses competed in different games and activities for points to win the House Cup. Lyon Concert Band to host spring concert The Lyon Concert Band will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, in Brown Chapel. The concert will feature the band performing several styles of music including “Don't Cry For Me Argentina” from the opera Evita and “In The Mood.” a Glenn Miller classic. Other selections for the concert will include “Pressure,” a depiction of the adversity we face on a daily basis, “Pictures At An Exhibition,” a six-movement piece originally written by Modest Moussourgsky, “Different Voices,” a representation of the different ways the human voice produces sound and “Chorale and Shaker Dance II,” based on the traditional American Shaker tune "Simple Gifts." Admission is free and the event is open to the public. Youth movie camp slated for July 14-26 The 4th annual T Tauri Youth Movie Camp is scheduled for July 14-26 in Batesville. Six workshops in various film-related topics are scheduled. Workshops are held at the Arkansas Sheriffs' Youth Ranch July 14-18 and on the campus of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville (UACCB) July 21-26. Workshop faculty includes award-winning media educators and professional filmmakers from Memphis, Nashville, Little Rock, Boston, and Los Angeles. |
