Swim club is new activity at Lyon

By Stephanie Hupp

Jessica Throesch started the Lyon College Swim Club this spring semester with Professor David Sonnier as the advisor. The Swim Club is open to anyone who wants to join for free. Students don't have to have previous experience to join.

The club meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. at the Becknell Gymnasium pool. Students can come on both days, or just one; whenever their schedule allows them. The club has about 12 members.

Throesch teaches swimming lessons in Batesville and decided to continue swimming at Lyon.

"I'd come back from lessons in my swim suit and people would ask me if Lyon had a swim team," said Throesch, "I realized we didn't. I thought since people were asking, it'd be a good idea to start something."

Swimming is not a varsity sport at Lyon and, for now, the team unable to compete in meets. Throesch said, "We're hoping we can start competing in the fall, but for now it's just a student organization."

The meetings last for about an hour and involve various types of swimming exercises. Professor Sonnier usually writes a schedule on a board for that day that includes how many yards, or laps, he recommends swimming, what type of strokes, etc.

Throesch explains that since every student is at a different level, they can go at a pace they feel comfortable with. She says the schedule is there to give students a general idea of what Sonnier wants them to practice for the day.

Sophomore Lindsey Fry is a member of the swim team.

"I'm glad that Lyon has a swim club now. I'm really enjoying the practices we've been having," said Fry.

For practices, Throesch suggests that men wear normal swim shorts while woman wear a one piece to be more comfortable and to be able to swim easier. Goggles and swim caps are optional.

The swim club is open to anyone that wants to join.
