Lyon students hold their own 'Iron Chef' competition

Ready! Set! Bake! That is exactly what six Lyon students did for the "Iron Chef" competition held by the Student Activities Council (SAC) recently. The Iron Chef competition, created by SAC member Paul Cootes, was a first-time event that will now be held annually.

The six students divided into a women’s team, which included Diedra Brauburger, Patricia Brown and Serena Cleveland, and a men’s team, which included Patrick McReynolds, Cory Emerson and Eric Morgan. It was a classic “girls versus guys” competition! However, this competition had a little extra surprise; each team was required to use three ingredients: egg, apple and chocolate.

The ladies started off with handmade ravioli, baked a main course of apple-stuffed chicken, and ended with a chocolate pudding with chocolate mousse on top. The guys began with a mixed salad of fruit and vegetables, provided a main course of egg burritos, and finished with a chocolate banana pudding. All of the dishes looked amazing! The judges definitely had their work cut out for them. The judges who held this responsibility were Matt Tolson, Carole Harris and Jessica Throesh.

After all the hard work of cooking and judging was done, the winners were announced É the girl’s team won! And Diedra, who was in charge of the apple-stuffed chicken, won best dish overall! As a reward, each lady received a $10 gift card to Wal-Mart, and Diedra also won an extra $20 gift card to Wal-Mart. Everyone who participated in the event, the cooks and the judges, received goody bags from Terry Bryant, manager of Sodexo Dining Services.

Along with the Iron Chef competition, SAC provided egg coloring materials in the Dining Hall and music in the Lyon Den to bring more students to the event.
