Students try out new disc golf course Walking across the Lyon College campus, one might notice a few additions scattered across the landscape in the form of 18 numbered, yellow-topped metal baskets. Just what are these yellow-topped baskets and how did they get here? Well, the baskets are actually holes on a golf course. A disk golf course, that is. Disc golf has arrived on the Lyon College campus, providing a fun new diversion for both Lyon students and the members of Batesville community at large. More

Powell established Petals from the Past nursery in 1994 in Jemison, Ala. Petals from the Past approaches gardening from an educational standpoint. Covering 23 acres, it specializes in antique roses, cottage perennials and herbs, heirloom shrubs, and a large selection of small fruits and tree fruits. Powell earned a bachelor's degree in landscape design horticulture from Auburn University and a master's degree in horticulture from Texas A&M. Katee Castleman of Batesville and Levi Rogocki of Norfork (Baxter County) were named Mr. and Ms. Lyon College at the President's Convocation Tuesday. Awards handed out at President's Convocation Four awards were handed out at the annual Lyon College President's Convocation Tuesday. Lyon College students Katee Castleman of Batesville and Levi Rogocki of Norfork were named Mr. and Ms. Lyon at the event. The Mr. and Ms. Lyon College honor is awarded to seniors who embody the ideal characteristics of a Lyon student. In his last President's Convocation remarks, Dr. Walter Roettger said Lyon College has reinvented itself from a small regional college to a nationally recognized institution. Roettger has been president at Lyon since 1998 but will retire in June 2009. More Stinson pens article for publication The current issue of "Bach: The Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute" contains an article by Dr. Russell Stinson titled "Clara Schumann's Bach Book: A Neglected Document of the Bach Revival." In the article, Stinson discusses his discovery of the volume as well as its historical significance. Over 30 facsimile pages are included. APPLE accepting applications Applications are now being accepted for the APPLE Project, a federally sponsored program for high school students, grades nine through 11. The APPLE Project serves young people who desire a college education but know they will require help with academic skills, study skills, personal guidance, career and financial counseling and other factors important for preparing them for an education beyond high school. Eligibility for the program is based on financial need and family educational background. This program is hosted by Lyon College, and participants are brought one night a week to the college campus and for a six-week residential program during the summer. Applications are available in high schools throughout Independence, Jackson, Stone, and Sharp Counties and at Lyon College. Applications are available on the internet at http://apple.lyon.edu.
