Princeton Review names Lyon College to list of ‘Best Southeastern Colleges’ The Princeton Review has again named Lyon College
a “Best Lyon College is one of nearly 139 schools receiving the Best in the Southeast designation, and one of only four Arkansas institutions on the list. More Lyon receives $20,000 from Walker Foundation Lyon College has received $20,000 from the Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation, Inc. to provide need-based scholarships for students. The Willard and Pat Walker Scholarship Fund will be used for first-generation students. Two students will receive $2,500 each for four consecutive years. Lyon College Vice President for Institutional Advancement Tim Bruner said the college is grateful for the foundation's help in establishing need-based scholarships. "Lyon College is fortunate to have the support of the Willard and Pat Walker Foundation in its ongoing effort to assist more first-generation students," he said. "Those students typically enter their college experience at a disadvantage, and Lyon College has historically been successful in providing the mentoring needed to encourage first-generation students to persist to graduation. With the support and encouragement from the Walker Foundation, we will be able to accept even more first-generation students and serve them at an even higher level." Upward Bound has successful year The Lyon College Upward Bound Math-Science 2008 Summer Session came to a successful conclusion on July 18. The program served 60 rising sophomores, juniors and seniors from 36 high schools in Arkansas. In addition to the program's full-time staff, several Lyon College faculty members and students or recent graduates were involved with the program during the summer session. Dr. Mark Schram mentored a student research group in reservoir biology, Dr. David Pace served as curriculum coordinator, and Isabelle Racine-Tenace taught French. Retired Lyon College professor, Dr. Veryl Board led an entomology research group and Carol Board mentored the chemistry group. Lyon College installs new security system Lyon College is enhancing its campus security by installing a digital key card access system on exterior doors throughout the campus. The new system will restrict access to certain places at Lyon, including residence halls and academic buildings. The system works by waving a special identification card over a reader placed to the side of the door. The reader recognizes the approved identification card and unlocks the doors. The doors will remain locked for any unrecognizable card. Batesville's 2nd Friday Downtown Wander and Wonder Walk set for Aug. 8 Downtown Batesville and the Batesville Area Arts Council are proud to announce the schedule of events and activities for the first 2nd Friday Downtown Wander and Wonder Walk, Aug. 8. Participating antique dealers and merchants will stay open until 8 p.m. Bruner graduates from Leadership Arkansas Tim Bruner, vice president for institutional advancement at Lyon College, was among the recent graduates of the Leadership Arkansas program's second class. Each year, Lyon College rolls out the red carpet to welcome new students and their families to the series of events and activities which prepare them to join the Lyon community as the fall semester begins. The schedules for freshman, transfer students and parents is posted on the Lyon home page, www.lyon.edu, and on the Admissions page. The schedules provide the roadmap for five days designed to help students settle in, get acquainted and feel welcome. |
