All students entering Lyon College this fall will be provided with Thinkpad R61 laptops, college officials announced today. The laptops are part of the college's Lyon Experience program that also features college-supported overseas travel and an experiential transcript that documents student accomplishments outside the classroom. CDW-G of Chicago, a Lenovo vendor, has been selected to provide Thinkpad R61 laptops, formerly made by IBM, to Lyon's incoming freshmen and transfer students. Heringer of Bismark, N.D., begins the position Aug. 1. As dean, he will be responsible for all facets of the College’s admission and financial aid programs. His duties will include leading and managing the College’s freshman and recruiting activities, directing its financial aid programs, representing the College to key external constituencies and providing staff support to the College’s Enrollment Services Committee. More Lyon Night at Dickey-Stephens Field set Lyon Night at Dickey-Stephens Field in North Little Rock is scheduled for July 11. Gates open at 6:15 p.m. for an all-American buffet picnic and game time is 7:10 p.m. The Arkansas Travelers will face the Tulsa Drillers. The picnic includes a choice of a backyard burger or hot dog served with all the trimmings. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Special bus transportation will be offered to Batesville area residents. Seating is limited, and on a first-come, first serve basis. Lyon College biology professor conducts research on the genome of toxic algae Dr. Han Chuan Ong, assistant professor of biology at Lyon College, was a member of a research team studying the genetics of a toxic algae that forms large blooms in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Their work, published recently in the May 8 issue of BioMed Central Genomics, characterized the chloroplast genomes of two strains of the same alga. More SAFARI kicks off first summer session

FilmFest accepting applications Ozark Foothills FilmFest is accepting entries for its second annual screenwriting competition. The competition, the only one of its kind in Arkansas, is limited to writers who have not yet had a work produced or optioned. Entry guidelines and an entry form are available at www.ozarkfoothillsfilmfest.org. The deadline is Dec. 1. Cash prizes will be awarded. Entrants will be honored and winners will be announced at a reception and awards ceremony during the 2009 Ozark Foothills FilmFest March 26-29 in Batesville. 'Southern Fried Saturdays' premieres at Rotary Club "Southern Fried Saturdays," a short documentary about fun and interesting things for teens to do in and around Batesville on Saturdays, recently premiered at the regular meeting of the Batesville Rotary Club. The film is the creation of three high school students: Rachel Braim of Marcella, Whitney Hembry of Newark and Hannah McGough of Floral. The students made the film in an academic-year community documentary workshop for Lyon College APPLE Project students. The workshop was created and sponsored by the T Tauri Film Festival. 25 attend Synod Women's Conference
Lyon College hosted a Synod Women's Conference for Presbyterian Women on May 23-25. The theme of the conference was "Spirituality Retreat - Listening to God". Rev. Sally Johnson, former associate pastor for Northwood Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Texas, now retired, was the leader for the retreat. She led the group to seek God through various avenues: In scripture and in prayer, in the ordinary and in nature, and in spiritual companioning. Approximately 25 women from all over the Synod attended the conference. One of the highlights of the retreat was a reception at Bradley Manor hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Walter Roettger. |
