Lyon 101 registration day will be April 5 Lyon 101, registration day for deposited students, will be Saturday, April 5. Another registration day will be held June 13. Students will be able to get IDs, parking passes, register for fall classes, and meet with their mentors. Spring Carnival is also planned for April 5, providing an opportunity for new students to get acquainted. Lyon 101 schedule Lyon delegates win multiple distinctions at regional honor society convention Lyon College delegates won multiple distinctions at a recent regional convention of the Alpha Chi National College Scholarship Honor Society. Four student delegates and faculty adviser Han Ong attended the convention for students from the honor society’s chapters in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The delegates learned at the convention that the Lyon College Arkansas Iota chapter had been named one of the society’s 2007 Star Chapters, a designation won by only about 10 percent of the society’s chapters nationwide. The chapter has earned the designation every year for the past 10 years. More Lyon Concert Chorale, Batesville Choral Society members to present first joint concert In their first joint concert, the Lyon College Concert Chorale and the Batesville Choral Society, both under the direction of Dr. Joel Plaag, will present a spring concert, “Ye Shall Have a Song,” at 7:30 p.m. April 4 in Bevens Music Room at Lyon College. The program will feature works by a mixed variety of composers, but the highlight will be the combined choirs singing American composer Randall Thompson's “A Peaceable Kingdom.” Both choirs will perform an all a cappella concert. The Lyon Concert Chorale will focus on folk songs and spirituals, while the Batesville Choral Society will perform an all-American set, including several early American "fuguing tunes," written by late 18th century Americans. The concert is free and open to the public, though donations will be gladly accepted. For more information call Plaag at 307-7259. Theater Department to perform spring production of “The Heidi Chronicles” April 10-13 The Lyon College Theater Department is gearing up for its performances of “The Heidi Chronicles” in April. Performances are April 10, 11, 12 at 8 p.m. and April 13 at 2:00 p.m. in Holloway Theatre. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students/senior citizens. Reservations can be made at 870-307-7510. This production is intended for mature audiences. Lyon guest organist to perform recital Organ virtuoso Clif Cason of the Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Ky., will perform on the Flentrop organ at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Christian Science Society, located at 18th and College streets in Batesville. Works by Bach, Buxtehude, Widor and others will be presented. The recital is sponsored by Lyon College. Concert Chorale tours three states The Lyon College Concert Chorale recently performed in three states — Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. The group performed at the First Presbyterian Church of El Dorado, Kan., on March 27. On March 28, the choir was at the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista and on March 29 at Dardenne Prairie Presbyterian Church, outside of St. Louis. On March 30, the choir sang as part of the worship services at Dardenne Prairie Presbyterian Church. The choir will present the same program locally with the Batesville Choral Society at 7:30 p.m. April 4 in Bevens Music Room at Lyon College.
Lyon art major to have work displayed in gallery Kristin Nichole Garrett, an art major at Lyon College, will have her work displayed today through April 11 in the Kresge Gallery at Lyon College, with an artist reception slated for 6 p.m. April 4. Garrett currently resides with her 9-month-old son, Payton in Pangburn. The inspiration for her artwork is derived from her son and the everyday task of being a new mother. Branscum senior exhibit begins this week Lyon College senior Leah Branscum has a senior exhibition beginning this week in the Kresge Gallery. Branscum’s exhibit “Beauty” began Saturday and continues through April 11. A reception is slated for 6 p.m. Friday in the gallery. “I like art to be personal in some way or another,” Branscum said. “This series in particular deals with the ugly side of beauty and the pain that women (mostly women) go through to reach the standards of beauty and/or acceptance within their culture.” Branscum said after graduating from Lyon, she plans to take a year off and apply to graduate school that offer masters programs in art therapy. Branscum is a 2004 graduate of Leslie High School and her parents are David and Shelley Branscum. Concert band to host spring concert The Lyon Concert Band will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. April 28 in Brown Chapel. The concert will feature the band performing several styles of music including “Don't Cry For Me Argentina” from the opera Evita and “In The Mood.” a Glen Miller classic. Other selections for the concert will include “Pressure.” a depiction of the adversity we face on a daily basis, “Pictures At An Exhibition,” a six-movement piece originally written by Modest Moussourgsky, “Different Voices,” a representation of the different ways the human voice produces sound and “Chorale and Shaker Dance II,” based on the traditional American Shaker tune Simple Gifts. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. Hogwarts Day slated for April 6 Hogwarts Day has been rescheduled for 2-6 p.m. April 6 on the Lyon campus. Hogwarts Day is based around the Harry Potter novels and movie. The event is named after the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the fictional school of magic that is the main setting of the Harry Potter series. It's a day of celebration open to children of all ages within the community and on campus. There will be games, toys and prizes. Library accepting book donations The annual book sale is scheduled for April 18-20 at the Mabee Simpson Library at Lyon College. Book donations will be accepted now through April 11. Donations are tax deductible and proceeds will be used to expand library collections and resources. Library hours are from 8 a.m.-midnight Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday, noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m.-midnight on Sunday. Donations may be dropped off at the library anytime during normal business hours. Friends of the Library are invited to the preview book sale from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17. Lyon SAFARI accepting applications Applications are currently being accepted for the Lyon College Summer Academics - Recreation and Fun Included (SAFARI) program. This year's sessions are June 2-13 and June 16-27. West Endowed Concert scheduled for April 3 The rescheduled West Endowed Concert will take place at 8 p.m. April 3 in Bevens Music Room on the Lyon College campus. The event was initially scheduled in January but was postponed due to inclement weather. In a program titled "The Magic of Sixty-Nine Strings,"
harpist Elisabeth Chardonet, double bassist John Dahlstrand and the
Rockefeller Spring Quartet will play works of Bottesini, Brahms, Caplet
and Ravel. Scottish Festival on campus April 18-20 For three days in April, the picturesque Lyon College campus will resemble the Scottish Highlands when the 29th Arkansas Scottish Festival takes center stage. Bagpipers, dancers, drummers, sheepdogs and kilts will flood the campus April 18-20 for demonstrations and competitions to celebrate the college's Scottish heritage. More
SCARF accepting applications
for projects The Student Creative Arts and Research Forum is accepting applications of scholarly, artistic and creative projects from Lyon College students. All finalists will receive a commemorative scarf, and $500 in cash prizes will be awarded. The deadline for submission is at 1 p.m. April 3. Submissions must be turned in to Peggy Weaver’s office on the third floor of the Lyon Building. |
