November 12, 2007 Lyon Community Orchestra to perform 'Caroling Christmas' Tuesday evening The Lyon Community Orchestra will perform a concert, "Caroling Christmas," at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Brown Chapel Auditorium. The concert is free to the public. Contemporary Writers Series to welcome novelist John Clayton for talk, reading The Lyon College Contemporary Writers Series will welcome novelist and short story writer John J. Clayton on Tuesday, Nov. 13. He will speak on the art of writing at 11 a.m. in the Bevens Music Room, and will give a fiction reading at 7:30 p.m., also in Bevens.
Lyon College to host Preview Day
Nov. 16 Lyon College will host its second Preview Day for high school seniors and juniors and their families on Friday, Nov. 16. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Lyon Building. Lyon College Concert Chorale announces itinerary for its upcoming concert tour The Lyon College Concert Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Joel Plaag and Ceil Smith, has announced its tour stops for the 2007-2008 school year. This year's concerts will feature J.S. Bach's Magnificat, Moses Hogan's My Soul's Been Anchored By the Lord, Russell Robinson's arrangement of Shenandoah, and other sacred and secular selections. On Sunday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m., the Concert Chorale will present its fall concert in North Little Rock at Park Hill Presbyterian Church, 3520 JFK Blvd.
'Political
animal' Skip Rutherford gives Skip Rutherford, a self-professed "political animal" who has been involved in numerous political campaigns, gave an early look at the 2008 presidential election in a speech at Lyon College on Wednesday. Rutherford, a Lyon trustee and dean of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, gave his comments at an event hosted by the Mabee-Simpson Library. Author and journalist Mara Leveritt talks about controversial West Memphis case In 1993, three 8-year-old boys were murdered in West Memphis. Despite the lack of hard evidence, police arrested three teens, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jesse Miskelley, for the murder. Award winning author Mara Leveritt visited Lyon College Tuesday, Nov. 5. to discuss these issues, which she has written about in her book “Devil’s Knot.”
Dr. David Thomas discusses possibility Lyon Music Department to host 'Gala Student Recital' and 'Beatlemania!' Students from the Lyon College music department will soon take the stage for a pair of performances of music ranging from opera to classic rock and roll. The first event will be the “Gala Student Recital” on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 in Brown Chapel. The second event is “Beatlemania!,” on Saturday, Nov. 17, also at 7:30 in Brown Chapel.Holocaust victim to speak at Lyon College A woman whose parents died in a World War II Nazi prison camp will visit Lyon College on Nov. 19 to share her story of the impact the Holocaust had on her life. The program, at 6:30 p.m. in Nucor Auditorium, is free and open to the public.
Lyon
College Concert Band to present The Lyon College Concert Band will present a holiday concert on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Chapel. The concert will be in conjunction with the student recital and men's chorale concert that evening. This semester marks the first opportunity in several years for students to perform in a concert band setting. International Education Week will be celebrated this week with several events International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
Adler wins Piper of the Day honors Kenton Adler was Piper of the Day at the Birmingham Solo Piping Competition held on Nov. 3 at the Ross Bridge Resort in Alabama.
Golf carts
provided shuttle service During Homecoming this year, Lyon offered a golf cart shuttle service for those who needed it. Bubba Burks ’54 provided the use of his personal golf cart and arranged to borrow three golf carts from the Batesville Municipal Golf Course. Julie Church, Lyon’s golf coach, recruited some of the Lyon golfers to drive the carts. Estate planning seminar presented at Hardy Lyon College participated in an estate planning seminar hosted by Spring River Presbyterian Church of Hardy on Thursday, Oct. 25. It covered various topics pertaining to estate planning, particularly in regard to wealth transfer. |
Staff Notes Brenda Lindsey, library technology/collections administrator at the Mabee-Simpson Library recently became a grandmother. Her son Tommy's wife, Sarah, delivered a healthy baby girl at White River Medical Center on Saturday, Nov. 3. They named her Alexandra Rose and are going to call her Ali. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. Sarah, Ali, and a very proud Tommy are doing well, Brenda reports.
