Lyon College hosting juried student art exhibition in Kresge Gallery this month

The best artwork from Lyon College students will be on display this month when the Kresge Gallery hosts the 5th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition.

The exhibition will be on display Jan. 8-25, with an opening reception and award presentation set for 6 p.m. Jan. 15 at the gallery. Awards will be given for first, second and third places. Lyon College President Dr. Walter B. Roettger will present the 4th Presidential Purchase Award for the “Best of Show.”

Lyon students entered up to five artworks each, and juror John Hartley selected the most successful work from those entries. The selected pieces will be displayed in the Kresge Gallery.

Hartley, an award-winning painter, sculptor and printmaker, said jurying an art exhibition is a complex task.

“Art is a subjective and personal experience for both the creator and the viewer,” he said. “Creating art requires dedication, passion and skill. A work of art contains three components: content, design and craftsmanship, and each must be executed skillfully for a work to be successful.

“As both viewer and juror, I rely on my own life experience and interest to connect with a work of art,” he added. “ For this exhibition, I selected prints, photographs, paintings and mixed media of representational and non-representational subjects that I relate to and feel are particularly successful.”
