Lyon to offer Frisbee golf next fall

By Lindsey Fry

Lyon College offers a variety of different activities on campus for students to be a part of. Several sports are sponsored at Lyon College such as volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball and golf. Other organizations that are open to all students include: Student Activity Council (SAC), Campus Ministries, cheerleading, and most recently added is the swim club, just to name a few.

Beginning next fall in the 2008 semester, there will be another event added to the roster of activity. It's called "Frisbee golf" (also known as "disc golf"). Not many people have played or even heard of this game, but according to Dr. David Thomas, "It is very popular among larger campuses."

This idea was formally put together by Dr. Thomas and Dr. Tim Lindblom, two biology professors at Lyon College. Dr. Bruce Johnston, dean of students, also helped plan the activity.

Frisbee golf is similar to regular golf in the sense that it is designed to be played just like golf, and set up to have 18 holes. Instead of holes to aim for there are targets to hit and instead of golf balls there is a Frisbee.

The game will take place next semester, and is open to anyone who is interested. There is no sign up date or scheduled practices. The only thing students have to do if they would like to play is to pick up a Frisbee, (if they don't already have one) and begin to play. The course is about two miles long, and wraps around the entire campus, beginning and ending near Young House. The game lasts about two hours from start to finish.

It is a good way for new students to get to know the campus," said Dr. Thomas, "but it's especially a fun way for all students to have a good time."

Dr. Thomas predicts that eventually there will be practices and possibly competitions for students most interested in playing. However, the course will continue to be open and usable at all times.
