Last month, Lyon had its first Earth Day. After dinner, students enjoyed the weather by relaxing around Couch Garden and playing Frisbee. An elm tree was donated by Luann Baker and the planting took place outside of the Alphin Building. Students then participated in a sidewalk chalk art contest and, later, many students had their faces painted. Phi Mu attended, supplying tools for students to plant their own flowers in recycled plastic bottles. In the end, everyone settled down to watch "The Story of Stuff." Winners of the Sidewalk Chalk Art contest received reusable shopping bags from Wal-Mart full of goodies as well as $20 gift cards. Allyn Dodd, academic coordinator/asst. director for APPLE Project and Upward Bound, said she hopes to host this event next year with more booths from campus organizations and outside businesses. "Earth Day went very well this first year, and hopefully it will only get bigger and better in years to come," she said.
