Eyes Wide Open exhibit examines the cost of war

By Courtney Kovacs

What is the human cost of war? The Eyes Wide Open exhibit of the boots and shoes of those who died in Iraq tries to make people understand this question. This exhibit came to Lyon College on March 6.

The exhibit opened with a brief ceremony. Two students, Natalie Marlin and Nathan Reinhardt, read the names of the dead from Arkansas, after a welcome from Dr. Martha Beck and remarks from Rick Elumbaugh, Mayor of Batesville. The Lyon College Pipe Band provided music, and Rev. Nancy McSpadden gave the benediction.

The exhibit was open from 6-10 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 7. It was sponsored by the Lyon Honor Societies Phi Sigma Tau (philosophy) and Theta Alpha Kappa (religion).

These boots represent soldiers who have died in Iraq. Organizers said the exhibit tries to make people understand the cost of war.
