Lyon students win distinctions at regional honor society convention

Lyon College delegates won multiple distinctions at a recent regional convention of the Alpha Chi National College Scholarship Honor Society.

Four student delegates and faculty adviser Han Ong attended the convention for students from the honor society’s chapters in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

The delegates learned at the convention that the Lyon College Arkansas Iota chapter had been named one of the society’s 2007 Star Chapters, a designation won by only about 10 percent of the society’s chapters nationwide. The chapter has earned the designation every year for the past 10 years.

All four students attending the convention were featured on the program, delivering papers based on research conducted at Lyon.

Robert Frank, senior biology major from Jonesboro and chapter president, presented a paper titled “Past, Present and Future Treatments of Leishmaniasis.”

Leah Byers, junior psychology major from Lexa, presented on “The Black Plague: The Interaction of Health and Religion.”

Jessica Brents, junior psychology and Spanish major from Morrilton, discussed “Condom Purchasing Apprehension,” a topic she researched with Byers.

Blake Perkins, senior history major from Smithville, presented a paper titled “Race Relations in Western Lawrence County, Arkansas.”

On the basis of his research and presentation, Frank won the competition for the society’s Joseph E. Pryor Region II Fellowship. Frank will enter medical school in the fall.

This year is the 13th consecutive year Lyon College delegates have attended Alpha Chi’s regional and national conventions. Like Frank, one or more Lyon College delegates have won scholarships and fellowships at 12 of those conventions.
