Lyon students present papers at symposium

On April 11 two Lyon College students, Christine Font and Kasey Parara, participated in the 2008 Arkansas Undergraduate Sociology and Anthropology Symposium on the UALR campus. They were asked to participate by Gloria Everson, associate professor of anthropology, who accompanied them to the symposium. This event provides a forum for students in these subject areas to present their research to their peers.

Christine Font, a Pocahontas native, graduates in May with majors in anthropology and history. Her paper, “Tikal and Spatial Organization,” examined the architectural layout of this archaeological site in Guatemala, drawing connections between construction locations and the cardinal directions.

“It was really scary to think that I would be presenting in front of a bunch of people that I had never met before, but I had to do it--I wanted to do it--because I knew that it would be very beneficial to me and my future," Christine said. "Once I got up in front of everyone it was easy, but I still need more practice."

Kasey Parara, a junior Spanish major from Sheridan, presented her paper, “Syncretism and Santos in Latin American Catholicism,” which focused on the influence indigenous religions have had on how Catholicism is practiced in Central and South America.

Parara remarked, "I never expected to present any research as an undergrad. It was incredible to be able to this. It was fun, too!"

This is the first time Lyon anthropology students have participated in the symposium, but Everson hopes to make it an annual event
