Southern California Chapter to be Established - Save the Date

Plans are underway for Peggy Roettger, director of alumni and parent relations, and Amy Bibb, coordinator for alumni relations, to be in Southern California on Tuesday, October 7, to launch the Lyon College Southern California (SoCal) Chapter of the Alumni Association. Our thoughts are to hold the reception in the Santa Monica area. If you know of a good restaurant with a private dining room, please let Peggy (proettger@lyon.edu) know. Mark your calendars now and weÕll forward a formal notice in the next week or so.

Question of the Week: Who was the fifteenth president of Lyon? The first to answer correctly gets an official Lyon t-shirt. Send your answer to Peggy at proettger@lyon.edu.

We hear through the Batesville Guard that Mark Sparks '97 lost a bet with his AP Calculus Class at Batesville High School. He made a bargain with his students: if each scored a 3 or better on the national AP test, he'd let them shave his head. That event took place a few days ago. "I have a big wall display in my classroom of kids who have passed the AP test, and it keeps growing bigger." Two years ago, 13 of his 18 students scored a 3 or better. One year ago, it was 15 of 18. This year, it was all 16 "which is remarkable in my opinion." Among the 16 are Belinda Bube (daughter of Dr. Paul and International Coordinator Joni Bube), Rascheed Jahan (son of Dr. Mahbubul Kabir) and Frances Winfrey (daughter of Dr. Frank Winfrey). Sparks, an award winning classroom teacher, received the Optimist Club's Community Educator of the Year honors in 2004.

Gayle Cooper '85 has been selected as the new vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville.
