Upward Bound Math-Science program accepting applications for summer session The Upward Bound Math-Science Program at Lyon College in Batesville is now accepting applications for the 2008 Summer Session. This is a six-week residential program for high school students who will be completing the 9th, 10th or 11th grades this spring. The program will be in session June 7 through July 18 for seniors, and June 14 through July 18 for sophomores and juniors. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 14. The program is designed to strengthen academic skills, particularly in math and science, for young people who desire a college education but who may need career counseling, personal guidance, assistance with study skills and other services important in helping them to prepare for college. Each student will participate in a group research project in a math or science related subject such as chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, mathematical investigations or environmental science. A college professor or master teacher will lead each research group and college students will serve as tutors. The program also provides ACT preparation and classes in English, literature, history and French. Students will take field trips to area industries related to math and science, and also to museums, theaters, ethnic restaurants and other attractions in cities such as Little Rock and Memphis. The program provides continued guidance and support to students during the academic year via newsletters and through assigned activities supervised by a sponsoring teacher selected by the student. There is no cost to students. Upward Bound Math-Science is a federally funded TRIO Program and student expenses are paid through funding from the U.S. Department of Education, including: room and board on the Lyon College campus; instruction and classroom supplies; and entrance fees and meals on field trips. Students in good standing will receive a weekly stipend of $15 during the Summer Session. Eligible applicants must be from a family where neither parent has a four-year college degree OR meet U.S. Department of Education income guidelines; be a citizen, national or permanent resident of the United States; and attend a high school that is served by the program. (The schools are listed on the program website.) The program will accept 58 students. Program information has been mailed to personnel in area high schools served by the program and UBMS staff will be available to provide application materials and information at selected schools during the month of February.
