2008 Visiting Fellow in Creative
Writing, M. Elaine Mar has lived an ever-changing life. She went from living in a crowded Hong Kong tenement to attending college at Harvard to becoming a professor and an accomplished author. Mar will bring her story of journeys to Lyon College in February with a public lecture and reading. The public lecture begins at 11 a.m. Feb. 12 in Bevens Music Room. The public reading will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Bevens. Mar, winner of the 2008 Visiting Fellowship in Creative Nonfiction, spent her early years in Hong Kong before her family moved to Colorado. In 1999, HarperCollins published her book, "Paper Daughter," a memoir of Mar's journey from a poor immigrant to a Harvard undergraduate. She currently is at work on a second full-length memoir. Mar's writings have earned her several awards include a Pushcart Prize in 2003 for her essay "Bi Bi Hua." Mar lives in Cambridge, Mass., where she is on the faculty of the Lesley University low residency Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing. In addition to Mar's February appearance at Lyon College, she also will host the "Memoir Matters Writing Workshop" from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 8 in Lyon's Alphin Building. The workshop is limited to 15 participants. The event requires pre-registration and fees ranging from $15 to $40.
