Lyon awarded grant for Japanese program

The Freeman Foundation has awarded Lyon College a grant of $25,000 in order to enhance the study of Japanese language and literature.

The Foundation funds projects that promote mutual understanding between the people of the United States and Asia.

The Japanese program at Lyon College has received grants from the Freeman Foundation since 2003. With the support of the Foundation, the college offers a minor in Japanese, established a tuition exchange program with Akita International University in Japan and hosts an array of cultural events.

Mieko U. Peek, instructor of Japanese at Lyon College, also intends to use the grant for a "Teaching Japan" workshop for local K-12 teachers, which will be offered June 6-7 this summer.
