Art major to have work displayed in gallery Kristin Nichole Garrett, an art major at Lyon College, will have her work displayed March 31-April 11 in the Kresge Gallery at Lyon College, with an artist reception slated for 6 p.m. April 4. Garrett currently resides with her nine month old son, Payton in Pangburn. The inspiration for her artwork is derived from her son and everyday task of being a new mother. “It is only human to surround ourselves with security and comfort, especially in the presence of vulnerability,” she said. “I began this work in the face of my pregnancy. It is meant to depict the variety of emotions that I experienced while pregnant and as a new mom: from embarrassment, to humor, to a love only known by a mother and child. “An unwed mother-to-be in the heart of the Bible belt, I isolated myself from society and surrounded myself with things and people that gave me great support,” she continued. “My dogs were a crucial element of my pregnancy. They have always been my “kids.” They always bring me comfort, joy, and support. In the darkest hours they are my light with their unconditional love and affection. Through them I found a means of happiness in my work, turning insecurity into positive production. Drawing them brought me peace, but even that was a struggle at times. I became just as frustrated with my art as I was with my revealing belly. However, I found strength for both by pinning my work up to face it every day and find a new approach. As I became more comfortable in my own skin the dogs became surrogate children. I went through the “nesting period” of my pregnancy coddling the youngest of my furry friends, instinctively preparing for the arrival of my son.” Garret said she felt like her work has come full circle to represent her and Payton’s growing relationship. “ When he was seven months old we began finger painting together creating awesome messes in the floor and lasting memories,” she said. “The necklace he got me for Christmas inspired me to take this concept a little further, representing our love with circles.” |
