Mission statement: The music major fosters strong skills in musical performance and introduces students not only to the canon of Western art music, but also to various non-Western and popular idioms.  It develops skills in analysis and interpretation as well as in performance that students can apply to a wide variety of musical styles.

Whatever your needs are from the music program at Lyon, we are here to  provide a solid foundation in music.  Your music study on our beautiful campus will not only enhance your skills as a performer and conductor but will also deepen your knowledge of music history, music theory, and music literature. Upon graduation, you will have acquired a comprehensive musical education.

The music major at Lyon provides excellent preparation for a career in music.  After completing a Bachelor of Arts in music, many of our graduates have been successful in careers as church musicians, school music teachers, private instrument instructors, organ builders, and professional performers.  Recently, our music graduates have been accepted to graduate programs at such prestigious institutions as the University of London, the University of Kansas, the University of Texas at Austin, and Arizona State University, and have received such awards as the Jacobs Scholarship, given by the Choristers Guild.

Caring, knowledgeable faculty members can help you tailor your major to meet your needs.  Class sizes are often quite small, allowing for a great deal of individualized study.

Aside from private lessons in piano, voice, organ, and orchestral instruments, you can further your studies by performing with the Lyon College Concert Chorale, a touring ensemble of singers who study in a variety of fields.  Other ensemble opportunities include the Lyon College Flute Choir, a strong regional flute ensemble with a fine reputation for its excellent performances, and the Lyon Community Orchestra, North-Central Arkansas’ only string ensemble.

Our small class sizes allow for practical, hands-on experiences in our upper-level courses, especially for aspiring music teachers.  We offer courses to enhance the education curriculum, giving you the preparation you need to enter the classroom.

At Lyon, you have the opportunity to hear professionals on a regular basis.  We have an annual artist series that brings outstanding musicians to the Lyon campus.  Chamber-music groups who have recently participated are Quink, the St. Louis Chamber Players, Chicago A Cappella, the Baltimore Consort, the Amsterdam Guitar Trio, and the Ethos Percussion Group.   Additionally, the Lyon College Japanese Lecture Series showcases performers specializing in non-western instruments.

Major campus concerts are held in Brown Chapel, which seats 500.  This room features a 37-rank mechanical action Holtkamp pipe organ, built in 1980, and two full-size Baldwin grand pianos.  (Organ students also have access to the neo-baroque Flentrop pipe organ located at the Christian Science Society in Batesville.)  The elegant Bevens Music Room, seating 120, provides phenomenal acoustics for chamber music and solo performances and features an eight-foot Kawai grand piano.  Other grand and spinet pianos, as well as a Hubbard harpsichord, are available for student practice in the Brown Chapel Fine Arts Building.

An elegant setting, personalized attention, and superior teaching – Lyon College Music is this and more.  Come visit our campus and see for yourself.
