PHI ALPHA THETA
Phi Alpha Theta is the International Honor Society for History. Founded at the University of Arkansas in March of 1921, its primary purpose is to recognize the exemplary work of college and university students in the field of history. The society also promotes the study of history, encourages research, publication, and exchange of ideas between historians. There are over 700 chapters in the U.S. Scholarship awards and prizes for papers are examples of advantages to members of the society.
Phi Alpha Theta sponsors numerous events, such as conventions and banquets, throughout the year to benefit members. The local chapter holds regular meetings as well as special events, including the presentation of speakers and programs of historical interest.
The requirements for membership at Lyon College are as follows:
Eligible students must have junior standing. They must have completed (prior to the semester when they are inducted) 12 hours of history at Lyon College, with at least a 3.1 average in these courses. They must have a GPA of 3.0 in their overall coursework. Further, each student must be in the top 35 percent of his or her class.
Faculty or staff who would have been eligible for Phi Alpha Theta at their undergraduate institutions (but were not inducted for some reason, usually the lack of a chapter) are eligible for induction through our chapter.
