The Writing Workshop

A Poetry Writing Workshop at Lyon College

Saturday, 20 March 2003

Who May Attend:

Hosted by Writer-in-Residence Andrea Hollander Budy
and conducted by Visiting Fellow in Creative
Writing Peter Abbs and Guest Writer Lisa Dart, the
Poetry Matters Writing Workshop is intended for
adults and young adults (including high school and
college students) interested in the art and craft of writing
poems, whether or not they have any poetry writing
experience.

What to Bring:

Participants should bring writing utensils and paper.
They may also bring a favorite poem (written by anyone,
famous or not) for optional sharing during the
afternoon reading.

9:30–10 a.m. Introduction of Peter Abbs & Lisa

10:15 a.m.– Workshop #1: The Autobiographical

12:30 p.m. Poem, conducted by Peter Abbs
(Alphin Room)

12:30–1:30 p.m. Lunch (Edwards Commons)

1:30–3:30 p.m. Workshop #2: The Poem that
Retells a Story, conducted by Lisa
Dart (Alphin Room)

3:30–3:45 p.m. Break

3:45–5 p.m. Plenary Session

Cost (includes lunch):

Registration may be done on the morning of the workshop.
However, participants are encouraged to pre-register,
and a discounted pre-registration fee is provided
for those who pre-register by March 1, 2004.

Note: Workshop participants are encouraged to attend
the free reading by British poets Peter Abbs and Lisa
Dart, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on the evening preceding
the Saturday workshop: Friday, March 19, 2003, in
Bevens Music Room (adjacent to Brown Chapel). The
reading will be followed by a reception and booksigning.

Biographical Notes:

Peter Abbs, a British poet and Professor of Creative
Writing in The Graduate Research Centre in the
Humanities at the University of Sussex, England, is the
2004 Lyon College Visiting Fellow in Creative
Writing. He has lectured on poetics and given poetry
readings and workshops in Britain, Australia, India,
and the United States. He has written widely on the
nature of creativity and the place of literature in education.
He has published seven volumes of poetry.

Andrea Hollander Budy is the Lyon College Writerin-
Residence. She is the author of five collections of
poems, most recently,
The Other Life (Story Line Press,
2001). Her awards include the Nicholas Roerich
Poetry Prize, The Porter Prize for Literary Excellence,
and the Pushcart Prize for Memoir.

Lisa Dart is a British short story writer and poet. She is
currently Director of the Talented Programme at Saint
Bede’s School in England and is working on a doctorate
at the University of Sussex in Poetry and Postmodernism.
