Established in the early 1990s with the appointment of a Writer-in-Residence,
and formally endowed in 2000, the creative writing program has quickly grown to
become a distinguished presence at Lyon College.
Interested students are encouraged to participate in the following ways:
- Each even-number
fall, prize-winning Writer-in-Residence, Andrea Hollander Budy, teaches
courses in the creative writing of poetry.
- A course in
advanced composition, which includes a section on the writing of creative
nonfiction, is offered annually.
- Every other year
the college offers a creative writing workshop in fiction.
- Within the
jurisdiction of the theatre program, a course in playwriting is offered as an
elective every other spring.
- Interested
students, whether or not they are registered for creative writing workshops,
are invited to meet with the Writer-in-Residence for private conferences.
- Each fall the
Visiting Writers Series brings two nationally acclaimed poets, novelists,
essayists, and/or playwrights to campus for readings, workshops, lectures, and
classroom visits.
- Each spring the
annual
Leila Lenore Heasley Prize is awarded to a distinguished member of the
national or international literary community, and the winner is brought to
campus for a public reading, lecture, and writing workshop.
- Students interested
in creative writing are encouraged to join the Erosophic Society, which
sponsors story readings, poetry slams, and other events that feature student
writers and their work.
- Students interested
in creative writing edit and publish the annual Wheelbarrow, a juried
literary journal which features original poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction,
and art.
