The U.S. Department of Education has established federal financial aid programs that are available to students attending post-secondary education institutions. The federal programs are determined and awarded on the family's financial need. Students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may apply on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov (Please be sure to list Lyon's code, 001088, and make a copy of your FAFSA for your records).

Standards for Maintaining Aid Eligibility

Students who receive financial aid from any federal, state, or institutional source must adhere to specified minimum standards of academic performance to encourage the completion of their degree requirements in a timely manner.

Eligibility criteria for federal aid programs require that a student:

  • be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student pursuing a degree or certificate in an eligible program

  • not be simultaneously enrolled in an elementary or secondary school while enrolled in postsecondary school

  • provide a valid social security number

  • have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED, or demonstrate the ability to benefit by passing an independently administered test approved by the U.S. Department of Education)

  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen

  • sign a statement of educational purpose/certification statement on refunds and default

  • be registered with the Selective Service, if required

  • for Title IV loans, have eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant determined

  • demonstrate need for financial assistance (not required for PLUS and Unsubsidized loans)

  • maintain satisfactory progress as identified by the institution

  • not have borrowed in excess of annual or aggregate limits on any Title IV loans

  • not have had federal benefits suspended due to a drug offense conviction

  • be enrolled at least half-time (except for the Federal Pell which allows les-than-half-time enrollment).
