As an independent
institution of
higher education,
Lyon College
receives no direct
state of federal
funding for regular
operating costs or
scholarships. Thus,
the college has had
to depend on
supportive alumni
and friends,
corporate partners
and generous
foundations to
assist the college
in capital projects,
scholarship programs
and endowment
growth.
Since more than 30
percent of Lyon's
budget is reinvested
back into student
financial aid, that
line item drives one
of the major
fund-raising
needs--student
scholarships. Each
year, the annual
scholarship fund is
targeted to offset
as much of that need
as possible, usually
covering about half
of the total.
A major portion of
the scholarship fund
is contributed by a
strong cadre of
alumni donors. In
fact, Lyon College
alumni hold the
distinction of
having the highest
alumni participation
rate (APR) in the
state of Arkansas,
which has been true
for the past two
years. At 49
percent, Lyon's APR
is actually among
the highest in the
nation, easily more
than double the
national average.
Many of the gifts to
the Lyon endowment
come in the form of
planned, or
deferred, gifts.
Financial
instruments, such as
charitable remainder
trusts, gift
annuities and will
bequests, allow many
donors an
opportunity to
contribute a much
larger gift than
they might be able
to on a regular
basis. Lyon has a
planned giving
program to assist
such donors.
Capital projects
from time to time
allow the college to
maintain facilities
at a
state-of-the-art
level. In the case
of most construction
projects and
renovation efforts,
naming opportunities
allow donors the
privilege of
honoring or
memorializing a
family member or
friend. Such
available naming
possibilities can be
obtained through the
Institutional
Advancement Office.
