Core Curriculum: Entering students participate in a time-tested and proven curriculum that develops intellect and forms character. The core curriculum ...

• Builds higher order writing and reasoning skills as well as qualities of character

These classroom lessons are complemented and amplified by formal and informal out-of-classroom experiences on our residential campus. These include the College's distinctive House system, Honor System and Social System as well as a rich array of student organizations that together create a vibrant campus life.

Strong majors; subject matter expertise: Lyon students develop depth of understanding and preparation for careers as well as graduate and professional studies through extended engagement in one of the College's 18 major field of study.

• Lyon major fields of study: accounting, art, biochemistry, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, education (early childhood/elementary), economics, English, history, mathematics, music, political science, psychology, religion and philosophy, Spanish, and theatre.

• Pre-professional studies: Lyon offers pre-professional programs of study leading to entry into dental, engineering, law, medical, ministry, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary schools.

• Flexibility and creativity – Students may propose and, with faculty approval and support, pursue self-designed majors tailored to their own interests. Back to top

Global perspective: Lyon's unique Nichols International Studies Program provides opportunities for all qualified Lyon undergraduates to travel and study internationally in the company of expert faculty while the College covers the costs of travel and lodging. As part of the NIS Program, Lyon students have traveled with faculty and peers to study in England, Germany, France, Spain, Belize, Peru and Japan. College support for these travels typically limits out-of-pocket expenses for student travelers to $750 or less for the two-week experience. More on Nichols International Studies

The Legacy Program: Lyon will document the out-of-class experiences that are vital aspects of enrollment at a residential undergraduate liberal arts college. The Lyon Legacy Program will provide an experiential transcript for each graduating senior that will:

• Document and affirm the value of out-of-class achievements in such areas as leadership, professional development, community engagement, collaborative inquiry, global understanding and aesthetic expression.

• Provide a permanent record of these activities and the transferable skills they entail.

• Serve as the basis for career development and academic advising.

Benefits received: Lyon students benefit in terms of on-time graduation and placement in careers and graduate and professional schools. Alumni credit their Lyon education with developing their reasoning skills, developing their character, expanding their awareness and enhancing their leadership skills.

• On-time graduation: on-time (four years) graduation: on average, Lyon students are

  1. More than two-and-one-half (2-1/2) times more likely to graduate in four years than the comparable figure for students at the typical Arkansas four-year college.
  2. As likely to graduate in four years (on time) as students at four-year public institutions nationwide are to graduate in six.
  3. This means that, on average, Lyon students begin their careers or professional education one or two years earlier than their counterparts and avoid additional years of tuition expenses. Back to top

• Placement success: Lyon alumni affirm their education and are welcomed by graduate and professional schools and sought by employers. Examples: Lyon students are admitted to graduate schools such as medical school and law school at more than twice the national rate.
