The
Lyon Experience FAQ

More info on the Lyon Experience:
Digital community:
Lyon's wireless environment extends the teaching and
learning community throughout the campus and provides a
wealth of opportunities for community building and
communication. For Fall 2008, Lyon will provide all
entering students with laptop computers. This will ...
• level the playing field from the
start for all entering students and provide "equal
access to success"
• provide tools for communications
within the campus and beyond.

Core Curriculum:
Entering students participate in a
time-tested and proven curriculum that develops
intellect and forms character. The core curriculum ...
• Builds higher order writing and
reasoning skills as well as qualities of character
• Fosters breadth for reasoned
judgment, perspective and global awareness
• Instills interest in and the
capacity for lifelong learning and promotes the
flexibility and confidence that come with it.
These classroom lessons
are complemented and amplified by formal and informal
out-of-classroom experiences on our residential campus.
These include the College's distinctive House system,
Honor System and Social System as well as a rich array
of student organizations that together create a vibrant
campus life.

Strong majors; subject matter
expertise: Lyon students
develop depth of understanding and preparation for
careers as well as graduate and professional studies
through extended engagement in one of the College's 18

• Lyon major fields of study:
accounting, art, biochemistry, biology, business
administration, chemistry, computer science, education
(early childhood/elementary), economics, English,
history, mathematics, music, political science,

• Pre-professional studies: Lyon
offers pre-professional programs of study leading to
entry into dental, engineering, law, medical, ministry,

Global perspective:
Lyon's unique Nichols International
Studies Program provides opportunities for all qualified
Lyon undergraduates to travel and study internationally
in the company of expert faculty while the College
covers the costs of travel and lodging. As part of the
NIS Program, Lyon students have traveled with faculty
and peers to study in England, Germany, France, Spain,
Belize, Peru and Japan. College support for these
travels typically limits out-of-pocket expenses for
student travelers to $750 or less for the two-week
experience.

The Legacy Program:
Lyon will document the out-of-class experiences that are
vital aspects of enrollment at a residential
undergraduate liberal arts college. The Lyon Legacy
Program will provide an experiential transcript for each
graduating senior that will:
• Document and affirm the value of
out-of-class achievements in such areas as leadership,
professional development, community engagement,
collaborative inquiry, global understanding and
aesthetic expression.
• Provide a permanent record of these
activities and the transferable skills they entail.
• Serve as the basis for career
development and academic advising.

Benefits received:
Lyon students benefit in terms of on-time graduation and
placement in careers and graduate and professional
schools. Alumni credit their Lyon education with
developing their reasoning skills, developing their
character, expanding their awareness and enhancing their
leadership skills.
• On-time graduation:
on-time (four years) graduation: on average, Lyon
students are
- More than two-and-one-half
(2-1/2) times more likely to graduate in four years
than the comparable figure for students at the
typical Arkansas four-year college.
- As likely to graduate in four
years (on time) as students at four-year public
institutions nationwide are to graduate in six.
- This means that, on average, Lyon
students begin their careers or professional
education one or two years earlier than their
counterparts and avoid additional years of tuition
expenses.

• Placement
success:
Lyon alumni affirm their education and are welcomed by
graduate and professional schools and sought by
